چکیده

There is now strong evidence that the metal-rich globular clusters (GC) near the center of our Galaxy are associated with the Galactic bulge rather than the disk as previously thought. Here we extend the concept of bulge GCs to the GC systems of nearby spiral galaxies. In particular, the kinematic and metallicity properties of the GC systems favor a bulge rather than a disk origin. The number of metalrich GCs normalized by the bulge luminosity is roughly constant (i.e. bulge SN ∼ 1) in nearby spirals, and this value is similar to that for field ellipticals when only the red (metal–rich) GCs are considered. We argue that the metallicity distributions of GCs in spiral and elliptical galaxies are remarkably similar, and that they obey the same correlation of mean GC metallicity with host galaxy mass. We further suggest that the metal-rich GCs in spirals are the direct analogs of the red GCs seen in ellipticals. The formation of a bulge/spheroidal stellar system is accompanied by the formation of metal-rich GCs. The similarities between GC systems in spiral and elliptical galaxies appear to be greater than the differences. Subject headings: galaxies: formation — galaxies: individual (M31, M81, M104) — galaxies: star clusters.

Spectroscopy of globular clusters in the low - luminosity spiral galaxy NGC 45 ⋆

Context. Extragalactic globular clusters have been studied in elliptical galaxies and in a few luminous spiral galaxies, but little is known about globular clusters in low-luminosity spirals. Aims. Past observations with the ACS have shown that NGC 45 hosts a large population of globular clusters (19), as well as several young star clusters. In this work we aim to confirm the bona fide globular...

Evidence for the Hierarchical Formation of the Galactic Spheroid

The possibility that the Galactic spheroid was assembled from numerous, chemically-distinct protoGalactic fragments is investigated using a Monte-Carlo technique designed to simulate the chemical evolution of the Galaxy in hierarchical formation scenarios which involve no gas dissipation. By comparing the observed and simulated metallicity distributions of Galactic globular clusters and halo fi...

Anomalous Gravitational Effects in the Universe

Based on previously published alternative reflections on gravitation, additional conclusions concerning anomalous gravitational effects in the universe are derived. For systems with spherical mass distribution and high central density of the luminous matter, abnormal increases in the gravitational potential towards the centers of these systems are derived. These anomalous increases are calculat...

We present a study of the globular cluster systems of two edge–on spiral galaxies, NGC 4565 and NGC 5907, from WFPC2 images in the F450W and F814W filters. The globular cluster systems of both galaxies appear to be similar to the Galactic globular cluster system. In particular, we derive total numbers of globular clusters of NGC(4565) = 204± 38 +87 −53 and NGC(5907) = 170± 41 +47 −72 (where the...

Globular Cluster Formation

The discovery of young globular clusters in merging galaxies and other environments provides an opportunity to study directly the process of globular cluster formation. Empirically it appears that globular cluster formation occurs preferentially in regions in which star formation occurs at a high rate and efficiency. Further, the interstellar medium in such regions is likely to be at a higher p...
